Charlottesville, VA

The independent City of Charlottesville in north central Virginia serves as the seat of Albemarle County, which surrounds Charlottesville as a separate legal entity. “C’Ville,” as it’s called, covers about 10.2 square miles of land, housing roughly 48,000 people under the motto, “A great place to live for all of our citizens.”

Founded in 1762, the city is named after the British Queen consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of George III and Virginia’s last Queen. Charlottesville then became the home of two early American presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Today the city maintains multiple attractions for its relatively small size, including seven breweries. Visitors enjoy wine and beer tours, ballooning, hiking and world-class entertainment. The University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville, and the Dave Matthews Band got their start here.
